Washington Foundations Award Over $1.4 Billion In Grants
Washington Foundation Assets Exceed $36 Billion
The largest 373 Washington foundations, whose assets represent over 99% of all Washington foundation assets, awarded $1,499,818,105 in grants, according to the newly released Washington Foundation DataBook, 4th Edition.

The DataBook lists every one of the 1,991 grantmaking foundations currently operating in Washington, and features comprehensive profiles of the State's largest 373 foundations. It is the only directory in Washington that lists every one of the 20,000 grants the State's largest foundations made for the most recent year on record.

The DataBook classifies each grant a foundation made by matching the organization that received the grant to a category from one of the 26 National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) categories, a system used to describe nonprofit organizations.

Of the over $1.4 billion in grants made by Washington's largest 373 foundations, organizations categorized under the NTEE category of Disease, disorders, medical disciplines received the most money--a total of $446,918,086 from 564 grants; educational organizations received $379,670,615 awarded from 5,285 grants; human services organizations received $220,962,424 from 2,702 grants; international organizations received $114,877,737 from 268 grants; arts, cultures & humanities organizations received 2,537 grants totaling $58,074,563; health organizations received $45,360,358 from 846 grants; community improvement organizations, which include organizations such as a Chamber Of Commerce or a United Way, received $38,625,863 from 796 grants; environmental organizations received 1,367 grants totaling $29,594,519; philanthropic organizations received $17,796,219 from 529 grants; animal-related organizations received $15,233,496 from 539 grants.

Other top categories include religious organizations, which received $13,266,178 from 939 grants; science organizations, which received $13,266,178 from 61 grants; and public affairs organizations, which received $12,379,276 from 132.

The 373 foundations profiled in the Washington Foundation DataBook, 4th Ed. have assets of $36,700,281,240 as indicated on their most recent IRS Return (form 990 or 990PF).
