Tulsa Foundation Assets Exceed $2.2 Billion
Tulsa Charities Received Over $77 Million In Grants
The assets of Tulsa's top foundations grew to $2,248,017,537 for the most recent year on record, according to the recently released Oklahoma Foundation DataBook, 2nd Ed. The 432-page DataBook lists every foundation in Oklahoma and profiles the top 214 Oklahoma grantmaking foundations, whose assets represent more than 99% of all Oklahoma foundation assets. The DataBook is the only directory in Oklahoma that lists every one of the 7,710 grants awarded by the state's largest foundations.

There are 98 Tulsa foundations profiled in the DataBook. The combined total of the grants awarded by Tulsa foundations was $122,310,640.

Tulsa nonprofit organizations received 2,414 grants with a combined total of $77,338,903. The average grant to Tulsa nonprofit organizations was $32,038.

Each of the 7,710 grants made by the profiled foundations is described using the 26 Major Field Areas of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) classification system, developed specifically to categorize nonprofit organizations. The top categories of foundation grants in Tulsa were: 39 grants classified as Philanthropy & volunteerism, with a sub-total of $17,782,784; 160 grants classified as Health, general, rehabilitative, with a sub-total of $13,030,916; 406 grants classified as Education, with a sub-total of $8,297,033.

Tulsa's largest foundation is the J. E. & L. E. Mabee Foundation, whose assets of $709,094,720 give it a state-wide ranking of 2, as compared to the other 213 foundations profiled. The largest Tulsa grant, made by Betty E. & George B. Kaiser Foundation, was to George Kaiser Family Foundation in the amount of $8,650,812. The purpose was: Charitable.

The combined asset amount of Oklahoma's top 214 foundations is $4,214,000,218. The foundations profiled in the DataBook are identified by careful cross checking of IRS and state public records (starting with the IRS 990 tax returns foundations are required to file), culling out dedicated purpose foundations or foundations which award scholarships exclusively.
