McAlester Foundation Assets Exceed $9 Million
McAlester Charities Received Over $540,000 In Grants
The assets of McAlester's top foundations grew to $9,197,411 for the most recent year on record, according to the recently released Oklahoma Foundation DataBook, 2nd Ed. The 432-page DataBook lists every foundation in Oklahoma and profiles the top 214 Oklahoma grantmaking foundations, whose assets represent more than 99% of all Oklahoma foundation assets. The DataBook is the only directory in Oklahoma that lists every one of the 7,710 grants awarded by the state's largest foundations.

There are 2 McAlester foundations profiled in the DataBook. The combined total of the grants awarded by Mcalester foundations was $744,380.

McAlester nonprofit organizations received 21 grants with a combined total of $541,911. The average grant to McAlester nonprofit organizations was $25,805.

Each of the 7,710 grants made by the profiled foundations is described using the 26 Major Field Areas of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) classification system, developed specifically to categorize nonprofit organizations. The top categories of foundation grants in McAlester were: 4 grants classified as Youth development, with a sub-total of $400,500; 5 grants classified as Community improvement, development, with a sub-total of $78,881; 3 grants classified as Human services-other, multi-purpose, with a sub-total of $18,880.

McAlester's largest foundation is the Puterbaugh Foundation, whose assets of $8,473,542 give it a state-wide ranking of 51, as compared to the other 213 foundations profiled. The largest Mcalester grant, made by J. E. & L. E. Mabee Foundation, was to Boys & Girls Club Of McAlester in the amount of $250,000. The purpose was: New building, multipurpose.

The combined asset amount of Oklahoma's top 214 foundations is $4,214,000,218. The foundations profiled in the DataBook are identified by careful cross checking of IRS and state public records (starting with the IRS 990 tax returns foundations are required to file), culling out dedicated purpose foundations or foundations which award scholarships exclusively.
