The assets of Omaha's top foundations grew to $879,049,140 for the most recent year on record, according to the recently released Nebraska Foundation DataBook, 3rd Ed.
The 528-page DataBook lists every foundation in Nebraska and profiles the top 290 Nebraska grantmaking foundations, whose assets represent more than 99% of all Nebraska foundation assets. The DataBook is the only directory in Nebraska that lists every one of the 8,677 grants awarded by the state's largest foundations.
There are 146 Omaha foundations profiled in the DataBook. The combined total of the grants awarded by Omaha foundations was $69,933,225. Omaha nonprofit organizations received 2,963 grants with a combined total of $64,061,134. The average grant to Omaha nonprofit organizations was $21,620.
Each of the 8,677 grants made by the profiled foundations is described using the 26 Major Field Areas of the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) classification system, developed specifically to categorize nonprofit organizations. The top categories of foundation grants in Omaha were: 469 grants classified as Arts, culture, humanities, with a sub-total of $16,377,002; 534 grants classified as Education, with a sub-total of $15,418,133; 158 grants classified as Community improvement, development, with a sub-total of $6,139,806.
Omaha's largest foundation is the Lozier Foundation, whose assets of $141,679,934 give it a state-wide ranking of 1, as compared to the other 289 foundations profiled. The largest Omaha grant, made by Holland Foundation, was to Omaha Performing Arts Society in the amount of $7,500,000. The purpose was: Operating.
The combined asset amount of Nebraska's top 290 foundations is $1,775,506,963. The foundations profiled in the DataBook are identified by careful cross checking of IRS and state public records (starting with the IRS 990 tax returns foundations are required to file).
