The Elisabeth A. McPherson Award for Women Writers -- Info & Application Instructions
The Elisabeth A. McPherson Award for Women Writers supports creative writing by providing lodging in a modestly furnished 1900-era house on the Long Beach Washington peninsula to a women writer during the month of November. Restricted to Pacific Northwest women writers of any age who will seriously pursue their craft, given the opportunity for solitude provided through use of this family beach house. Towns on the peninsula are relatively quiet during November, which is also the rainy season. We hope the solitude and opportunity for peaceful isolation will help many women writers achieve their writing goals. The award is for one time only. Food is not included, however the house has a fully functional kitchen.

Please submit 8 copies of Parts I, II, and III. Type each response on a separate piece of 8.5x11.0-inch paper. Restrict your answers to 1-2 pages, using one side of each sheet, double- or single-spaced. Be as specific as possible. Each Part counts equally-your writing sample is no more heavily weighted than the other Parts.

PART I
Describe the work you wish to complete while in retreat on the Long Beach peninsula. Mention briefly what plans you have for making progress on your work if you are not selected.

PART II
State how you expect a stay of four weeks in isolation will benefit your work.

PART III
Submit a representative sample of your work-a chapter of a book, a work in progress, a screen play, poetry, pages from a journal-or something else.

For Part III, submit no more than 10 pages of prose or screen play; no more than 5 pages if poetry. Type poetry single spaced, prose double spaced. Do not submit photocopies from a book, magazine or newspaper article.

Please-Title and number each page. Do not put your name on anything except the page titled "Application for Residence." Only complete applications will be considered; materials will not be returned.
